Philips Lumea is the best beauty investment ever! I’ve always struggled with extra hair growth so I decided to invest in this device very hesitantly. I wasn’t sure how well it would work on me but I took the plunge after months of research since this device isn’t cheap. It’s been 4 years since I’ve been using it and I have no regrets whatsoever. It’s the best beauty investment I ever made.
I am an Asian with a brown skin tone and black, extra thick hair. Due to some medical conditions my hair growth is rapid so I was fed up of having to wax every 2 weeks. Therefore it made total sense to purchase this beauty.
What is it?
The Philips Lumea is an IPL hair removal device that guarantees up to 6 months hair free anywhere on your body.
It delivers gentle pulses of light to the hair root, putting the hair follicle in to resting phase. So hair doesn’t grow as quickly as it normally would if you waxed, threaded or shaved.
A major misconception is that it will get rid of all your hair forever. That’s definitely not true, the amount of time you use it will reduce. So from every two weeks, it’ll shift to every few months or more. After a few sessions, my hair growth reduced and the growth was a lot slower.
However if you don’t keep up with the touch up sessions, the hair starts to grow back the same way it did before.
This has happened with me, there was a time I left around 3/4 sessions and the hair started to grow back quicker. But then you can start the process again so it’s not a bother at all. Which means if you are busy mum, have work commitments, or unwell it may just happen that you forget your touch up sessions. Don’t you worry, start the sessions again and you are good to go.
What’s included?
The Lumea Device comes in a chic white pouch that includes three attachments. The attachments include heads for body, face and bikini. It also comes with a little cloth that you’ll need to wipe the attachment with after you are done with the sessions. It also includes an instruction booklet which gives pretty much all the information you’ll need. The instructions are very clear and descriptive.
How long does one session take?
There are 5 settings so you can start off with the lower setting until you get used to the flash. I went in straight with setting 5. When I do it on my face and neck it literally takes around 5 minutes, that too because I like to go over a few times to overlap with the device, which isn’t necessary at all but I just like to do it in case I missed a spot! Legs will take around 20 minutes.
It’s super easy to use, just put it on your skin and press the button and glide to the next area. Just make sure you follow all the instructions.
How do I prep my skin?
Before you treat any area and in between sessions, you’ll need to shave the area. You can’t wax or thread as that will pull the follicle out which is not the aim at all. However the shaving in between sessions is bare minimum because the hair growth is super slow or non existent.
Does it cause any Damage?
It doesn’t cause any damage to the skin! There is no darkening of the skin and it doesn’t burn your skin either. However I observed that after the device has been on for a long time, it does start to get hot. So just give it a few minutes rest and start again.
What are the benefits?
It will leave you hair free for months. You’ll need to top up every 3/4 months. Skin will be super smooth and soft. It will save you a lot of time and money too. Imagine no trips to the salon for waxing or threading.
One time investment will last you so many years. I read that the number of flashes run out after a few years but that’s not happened with me just yet. Philips Lumea is the best beauty investment I ever made so even if the flashes ran out, I’ll definitely repurchase.
When is the best time to buy it?
I bought my Device during Christmas sales from Boots and it was half price!!! So I would highly recommend waiting for Christmas sales so you can save money. I’ve seen it go half price at Boots and Amazon so just keep an eye out.
Mine is a slightly older model but the new model has a smart skin sensor that measures your skin tone and indicates the right setting for you. Its available from Amazon here.
If you do plan to purchase it, make sure you check their official website for hair and skin types it’s suitable for. Their website states that “Philips Lumea cannot be used to treat white/grey, light blonde or red hair and is not suitable for very dark skin. This is due to the high contrast required between the pigment in the hair colour and the pigment in the skin tone”.

Philips Lumea is the best beauty investment I ever made and I highly recommend it to all the ladies fed up of going for frequent waxing. I know many girls suffering from hormonal conditions who have rapid hair growth, this will be ideal for them. Its really easy to use and very convenient to take on travels too. Waxing and threading of the face can leave you with spots, redness and saggy skin so to save yourself from all of the after effects just invest in this device. You need this if you want to be hair free.
